Spring 2012 Seminar 2

Those of you who missed our Internship Seminar last week missed an opportunity to practice your interview skills. We explored the common questions you can anticipate in graduate school or job interviews, and ways to highlight your internship experience during these.

For your make-up assignment, write a comment which shares your answer to one of these potential interview questions:
1. For students who anticipate seeking a job after graduation -  "What skills have you used during your internship which you believe will help make you a stronger asset to your future employer?"
2. For students who anticipate applying to graduate/professional school after graduation - "How has your internship helped you get more out of your classroom experience?"
3. For students who need a back-up question - "Tell me the most important thing you have learned about working with others."

I look forward to your comments!

  1. 1. I have used and learned many skills through my internship that will help me in the field of ministry. I have learned and experienced how to interact with elderly members of the church who are in the hospital or are not able to leave their house due to sickness. Interacting with them brings joy to their day and is some of the only socializing they get the chance to do. I have learned that they do not like to dwell on their illnesses but like to hear about what else is going on in the church and the rest of the world. I have also learned that one of the things they want most is to have someone pray for them.

  2. "How has your internship helped you get more out of your classroom experience?"
So far, my internship has helped enforce many topics I have learned in my classes as PC. Courses like microbiology and biochemistry have taught me some things that I am reviewing in my internship, along with having to learn how to use equipment that I have only read about. I love working in lab at PC so being able to come to my internship and be in a lab environment learning the things that will help me get a job later in life is not only rewarding but also fun.

  3. I have learned a lot from my internship that I can use in the classroom. I have learned some organization skill, as well as Microsoft Excel savae now. I have learned some social and communicational skills that I can use in the classroom as well as my day to day life. I have learned a lot about the pharmaceutical field, and become good friends with the FDA. I have learned the regulations and processes that go into making the medical goods of the world.

  4. "How has your internship helped you get more out of your classroom experience?"

Most of what I have learned in my classes, such as physiology and immunology, has been really applicable to what I've been observing in my Physician's Assistant internship. While most of the cases that have been coming into the PA's office have been minor colds and flues, it has been really interesting to know why a patient has been prescribed a certain medication or told to treat their symptoms a certain way. Seeing how information that I'm learning in class can be applied to the medical profession helps me apply what I'm learning in a different way and think differently.

I have learned that not everybody has the same beliefs as I do and that I have to be open to others tradition. Doing an internship at a different denomination than what I was raised in takes more time to learn and understand. The people at Friendship AME church are very open to me and my ideas and they have help a lot with teaching some of the rules and reasoning as to why they do things.

  6. 1.I think in my internship i have just learned a lot about communicating with people and sympathizing with them but also setting up proper boundaries. I am thinking about going into ministry and setting boundaries is so necessary in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and marriage which i am also preparing for. There will always be people in need who are calling in to get an appointment and get your help as a counselor or as someone who is ministering to a bunch of people. I have learned how and when to say no and that will allow me to have more freedom and more energy to counsel people.

  7. 2. I believe that this internship has allowed me to see what i have been learning about and experience just that. I have learned a great deal about information i learned in class that is important. If end up going to a graduate program i know exactly what i should focus on based on what i want to do in the future. In software development we talked about issues that would come up when we started developing software. Almost all of those issues have come up and it's very cool to see what i learned at Presbyterian being applied in my daily life.

Through my internship there were many experiences that will continue to help me sell myself to potential employers. The daily interactions with a variety of customers and employees brings about real world experience of handling yourself in a professional manner. Also, the variety of tasks assigned help to provide examples of business experience that employers will ask you to provide throughout the interviewing process.

My internship allowed me to better visualize the things that I learned in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. Seeing how these subjects can be applied in the real world made what we were doing in class more interesting and helped in the learning process. It's great when you get to use the information from the classroom in the real world.

  10. Thanks, everyone who has commented so far! Two more folks had some technical difficulty posting, so I'll copy and paste their answers here:

from Jesse Reville - "2. For students who anticipate applying to graduate/professional school after graduation - "How has your internship helped you get more out of your classroom experience?"

When deciding on what career path to take especially when determining if graduate school would be right for me, I can honestly say having my internship has helped me in making the best decisions for me. Grad school is a huge commitment and only so much can be learned within the classroom walls and having an internship allows for necessary hands on experience. Being able to see someone actually having a successful career in my own goal area, is not only motivating but encouraging to have someone tell me they have once been where I am and look at all they have accomplished."

AND from Blake Dowd - "...the most important skills that I have gained from my internship are Time management in completing the management training, and interpersonal skills in dealing with prospective clients and employers, as well as effective communication skills."

  11. My internship has greatly helped me to be ready for the workforce in just a few months. Being in the gym so much for my internship has allowed me to test my people skills. Getting to know people in an environment that can be comfortable, and extremely uncomfortable for some has allowed me to notice behavior patterns, and is giving me the ability to get people out of their comfort zone as well as myself. Getting to work out with personal trainers and getting to train people as well has been a great experience that will really help me to be successful in the future!

  12. The most important thing I've learned working with others is just how important communication is. One of my objectives in my internship with the hospital is how other departments work together, but I didn't realize how much communication goes on between the different I've been with in my rotation. For example, the wound healing center often sends their patients to the hospital in order to make sure their patients are getting the treatment they need. With the communication I've observed, I've realized how smooth departments work.

In regards to transferable skills learned during my internship, I believe that handling the intricacies of casework will prove to be very valuable to my future employers. Also accompanying the social workers allows me to engage in a setting that helps me learn skills such as assessing a problem, course of action, and gathering information objectively. The skills mentioned will hopefully provide themselves vital to not only me but also to my possible employers.

My internship has given me great hands-on experience that classroom settings do not offer. Through my internship, I can apply what I am currently learning in microbiology and psychology to the field of dentistry. For example, it has been neat to see various sterilizing techniques and antiseptics we have used and studied in microbiology used at my internship. My internship has also encouraged me to make connections with what I am learning in my classes to the dental field.

Through my internship, I have learned how various departments work and depend on the accounting office. Many of the items needed by the financial aid office requires the input from the accounting department. Even from the smallest items such as codes for scholarships, are created in the accounting department. At my internship, I learned and watched how the computer becomes your new best friend.

Although I wasn’t able to do any hands on labor at Adair Apothecary I was still able to sharpen my communication skills, which is probable one of the biggest skills that I will need in the career I wish to pursue as a pharmaceutical sales representative. While at my internship I sharpen my communication skills by being able to talk with customers as they waited on Mr. Adair or the other employees to aid them with their problems. This was helpful because public speaking is a big attribute that you will need as a pharmaceutical sales representative.

  17. 1. For students who anticipate seeking a job after graduation - "What skills have you used during your internship which you believe will help make you a stronger asset to your future employer?"
Through out my internship this semester I have constantly been required to speak to professionals and make connections within the community. I have gained greater experience in my communication skills that I believe will make me a stronger asset to my future employer. I have also had the opportunity to work with a team; campaign team. I have had to communicate within the team and work together with them.

  18. The most important thing that I have learned by working with others, is that communication is key. Especially with being new in a certain environment, asking questions and paying close attention to directions is very important. At my internship I have to enter data into a software specific for filling prescriptions and it took a while to get used to but I had to pay close attention to how it works so I didn't have to keep asking how to do things and taking the others workers away from what they were doing. Therefore communication and listening are important keys that I've learned in my internship.

  19. The most important thing I have learned in working with other is that you must have great communication skills. Without this, there will be confusion and everyone may be on different pages. Bring in ideas that can help the task yal are seeking to accomplish and also listen to the ideas of others, and take it into consideration. Listen well as pay close attention to details. For example, when i sat in on a couple of employee meetings they all had the chance to state what they thought the company should do to improve things. The all gave each other respect and listened to what they had to say. This helped them come up with the best possible solution.

I am working with Donna Toland; We travel to different homes and schools in the Upstate checking on families making sure they are doing what the court expects them to do. Along with the home and school visits, I get the chance to see how Donna question the parents and the children, and how she handles different situations. Hopefully befor ethe summner is over I will get the chance to sit in on one of her cases and see how she defend a child that comes from a bad situation, and the court places them in a proper home.
