Sizzling!

Tom with Mulligan
Have you ever known anyone who seemed to do everything to the best of their ability? Those people who seem to find energy at the crucial time or offer just the right encouragement to coworkers?

As you move through the work environment, certain people start to stand out as positive examples. These individuals are "On Fire" in their field; they are the people who know how to get the job done and how to motivate others to do their best.

While I don't want you to publicly embarrass anyone by naming names, I'd like to to take a few minutes to describe the characteristics you believe help someone to become a Sizzling Star. Then share your thoughts of how you can develop these skills yourself.

And thank-you to those of you who have started sending me photos and intern stories. Here are a couple of you Stars at your locations this summer.

Looking forward to some great stories!

While at Back to the Basics, I've observed two indiviual who are "Sizzling Stars." I think they are "Sizzling Stars" because they keep their cool throughout the day and that's not easy to do when you are around kids all day. Their presence alone in a room is enough to make the kids settle down. They smile throughout the day even when they are hot and annoyed. They have an amazing amount of patience and tolerance. In lots of ways I'm very similar to them except I haven't reached that level where my presence alone settles the kids and my tolerance for repeating myself is very low. Once I improve upon those things then maybe I can become a "Sizzling Star."

The characteristic that I believe make someone a Sizzling Star is the ability to remain calm in a stressful situation. Everything can become stressful at times and the capacity to handle a stressful situation with patience and kindness marks the type of person who, in my opinion, is a Sizzling Star. There is a woman I work with at the gallery who has a constant smile on her face no matter what the situation. She is always polite even when she has had a bad day and always works to the best of her ability. Even when she has a lot on her plate, she is always willing to lend a hand. It is this type of person that you value as a coworker. Constant patience and kindness are vital. There is much improvement that I need to make in the area of patience in stressful situations. I have a tendency to become flustered and short with people when my day is not going well. That is something I need to work on correcting.

In the last couple of weeks working at Laurens County Hospital, I have shadowed and met many people that have great qualities and could be considered a Sizzling Star. Some characteristics that I believe that make up this star is having a positive attitude and great leadership in all situations. A person you can look up to when times are tough and knowing they will always be there to help you out. A sizzling star I think is someone who will help out in any situation whether they have to or not. Someone who can keep a difficult time fun and uplifting and keep a positive attitude in a difficult envirnoment.

Some of the doctors that I have shadowed and seen in the surgery room would be someone I consider a Sizzling Star. They communicate to their team very well and has a great relationship with all of them. When a problem comes up, they do not panic but stay calm and work through the problem without upsetting anyone in the process. I feel I need to work on communicating better in difficult times and keeping my patience with others. Watching and learning from these doctors are helping me understand how to handle situations better.

I have noticed mulitple Sizzling Stars working for the Greenville Drive. We have one person who is constantly walking around the ballpark greeting fans and making sure they have the time of their lives at the game. This person is constantly energetic and is very driven. I think what makes a Sizzling Star is the ability to bring the same great attitude to the work place everyday. It is very difficult to have such a great attitude everyday when the work place can be so stressful.

I've met a few people while interning that I would consider a Sizzling Start. In order to be considered a Sizzling Star, one has to be committed, optimistic, energetic, and always willing to do what it takes. The Sizzling Stars that I've met have helped me learn in what I believe almost every way possible. They will walk in my office at random times and ask me what I've learned either that day, week, month, or in the internship's entirety. Although it is a hard question, putting me on the spot really makes me think not only during that moment but also during the entire work day. What am I learning, what can I do better, and how can I become better at what I'm trying to do? My Sizzling Stars have promoted being positive in every aspect of work and realizing that you can and will learn from everyone you come in contact with. Even with the most depressed people in this psychology office, those Sizzling Stars show more hope than ever.

Lone Oak Retrievers only has two full-time employees, and they are both Sizzling Stars. They put countless hours into transforming dogs from just dogs to absolute retrieving machines. Melanie, J. Paul's wife, works with all of the young dogs before handing them over to J. Paul for advanced work. She is an awesome trainer and has an incredible engery when working with the pups. J. Paul works with the more advanced dogs. He has a very intense training style and always gets the dogs to perform to the best of their ability. They were also both very helpful in teaching me about dog training and the dog training business. Their training duo definitely sets them apart from other retriever training kennels.

  7. It is hard for me to find just one sizzler in my group at Milliken. Everyone is always very busy, and they work so much as a group that I would have to say that the whole group is sizzling. They are constantly busy getting the new and constantly changing chemical products registered and approved for sale. It is very impressive how much work they get done.

  8. I agree with what some of the other students have written and think that it is hard to identify one "sizzling star" because everyone works really hard and sacrifices a lot everyday at the Clinton Public Safety. So, instead of picking out one person I'd like to commend all of the Law Enforcement officers and the fire and rescue team members for the job that they willingly do everyday. These employees put in countless hours and dedicate their time to the well being of the people in their commununity. The people at the station need to really love what they're doing in order to sacrifice free time, time with their loved ones, and in some instances their lives. I think all of the workers there are hard working "sizzling stars".

  9. At Menchie's there are certainly particular employees that work hard and encourage others to do the same. One of the people I work with is somewhat quiet and reserved, but because of his positive attitude and hard-working spirit, he encourages others to work hard as well. While I have seen this example and thought about the positive example this employee sets, I have realized that good work ethic and discipline in the workplace is caught, not taught; it is far easier to follow an example than emulate an abstract principle.
